  • That's it from this Test match. All of a sudden, India are looking smoking hot and have the momentum heading into the next Test match. The home team will be gutted at the moment but they still have the lead in the series and would like to return to winning ways in Southampton. That match starts on 30th August at 1100 local (1000 GMT) and we look forward to your company then. Cheers!
  • Man of the Match and Indian skipper, Virat Kohli says, it is a very special day for him and he would like to dedicate this victory to the flood victims of Kerala. Further adds it was a much-needed one and the management and the players are very proud of what they have done. Admits they did not panic heading into this game, they needed their batting had to step up and that is exactly what happened. Credits the way his bowlers bowled. Mentions the catching was also excellent in this game. Reckons the partnership between Rahane and him was very important. Adds further, you need determination and grit to play against a quality bowling line-up and Pujara and Jinx did show that. Says the runs he scored is dedicated to his wife who is there with him. States they are really proud of their pacers outpacing the English bowlers. Ends by saying he believes they can surely come back and win the series as the team is hungry.
  • England skipper, Joe Root, says he has no regrets on the team selection and the decision he made at the toss. He feels they could have bowled slightly fuller and a bit straighter. Credits the way India batted. He admits they underperformed with the bat in the first innings. Further adds that the partnership between Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler is something they should learn from. Mentions they are always looking for new plans against Virat Kohli. Reckons they have managed to keep him quiet but are finding it difficult to get him out. Admits they are working extremely hard on their slip catching which has been very poor. He hopes to get it right as soon as possible as catching is very important. On Bairstow's injury, he hopes that he recovers as soon as possible and wants him fit for the next Test. Admits the conditions have been very tough for the batsmen. States they have got two very good players at the top and he is pretty sure they will come out with a strong response. Appreciates Buttler's knock saying he just proved he is a player who can adjust to all formats.
  • Coming to India's bowling, they weren't bad in the previous Tests either but here at Trent Bridge, they turned up the heat. The inclusion of Jasprit Bumrah bolstered their pace attack and along with Ishant Sharma, he was next to unplayable. Not mentioning Hardik Pandya's bowling in the first innings will be a grave injustice. His maiden Test fifer completely broke England's batting and sowed the seed for this convincing win. Mohammed Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin (who wasn't fully fit) also played their supporting roles well. One thing worth emphasizing is their catching, especially in the slip cordon. They just fine-tuned every area and outclassed the hosts in all the departments. Presentation coming up...
  • Criticism is a good thing if it's constructive and the one getting criticized takes it in a good spirit. Also, self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings. The numero uno Test team took all the criticism in their stride and displayed immense self-belief to achieve their first win of the series. Their batting had the discipline unlike the last two Tests and they looked motivated. Both Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul though will be kicking themselves for getting out in both the innings after doing all the hard work. However, their efforts made it easier for Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane in the first innings and Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara in the second innings. The Indian skipper got mentioned twice in the last sentence and that in itself speaks about the brilliance with which he led from the front.
  • It turned out to be a tale of one session where England lost all their 10 wickets. That really was the massive moment in this Test as that handed India a big advantage, a lead in excess of 150 runs, that too on Day 2 itself. The home team will be very disappointed with their batting effort. A big question mark over their opening pair and then the inconsistencies of the rest of their batsmen as well. Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler showed on Day 4 how it's done but that was the only bright spot in an otherwise insipid batting effort.
  • What an exceptional Test match for India! The Kohli-led team showed great character and grit to bounce back from a morale-deflating loss at Lord's to register a comprehensive win. The series stands at 2-1 now, still in favour of England but this victory has definitely spiced things up for the remaining two Tests.
  • Right then, it took India just 17 balls to pick the last wicket. The Indian team is celebrating. A crushing defeat for England. The players in the middle are shaking hands. Job well done by the touring team.
  • 104.5OUT! In the air... and taken! Ashwin gets his name in the wickets column. He bowls this outside off, it is the leg spinner. Anderson does not pick it as he goes on the back foot for the square cut. But the ball turns back in with extra bounce, hits Jimmy on the gloves and lobs behind. Rahane backtracks from first slip and takes a dolly. The players appeal and the umpire raises his finger. Smiles all around in the Indian camp as THEY WIN BY 203 RUNS AND KEEP THE SERIES ALIVE!
  • 104.4Goes for the sweep but gets it off the inner half towards deep square leg for a run.
  • 104.3Close shave! Ashwin fires it down the leg side, it was probably the leg spinner. Anderson goes for the sweep but misses. The ball just about misses the leg pole.
  • 104.2Floats it up on off, Rashid keeps it out.
  • 104.1Slower through the air on off, Anderson goes for the drive but gets an outside edge wide of the slip cordon and towards third man. Ishant Sharma hares behind it as the ball starts to slow up as it reaches towards the ropes. Ishant does not want to stop it but the ball itself stops before reaching the fence. Sharma has a smile on his face as he picks it up and throws it back in play. The batsmen take three and Anderson is off strike.
  • Ravichandran Ashwin is into the attack.
  • 103.6Shortish on off, Rashid guides it to the man at point. No single and Anderson will be on strike for the next over. 313/9
  • 103.5Length again on off, Adil defends it to the man at covers.
  • 103.4A bumper down the leg side, Rashid goes for the pull but misses.
  • 103.3Back of a length delivery again on off, Rashid gets behind the line and keeps it out.
  • 103.2Length on off, Rashid guides it towards point.
  • 103.1First runs for England today! On the pads, Adil works it through wide mid on, he did not want to run initially but seeing there was a brace on offer, he goes for it. Ashwin was the fielder who was just jogging after the ball.
  • Mohammed Shami to bowl from the other end.
  • 102.6One over survived, 'only 89 more to go' for the last pair to play out. A little to wide outside off, Anderson plays inside the line and lets it be. 311/9
  • 102.5Good length around off, this one pitches and then moves away. Anderson covers his stumps and tries to block but misses to get hit high on the pads.
  • 102.4Almost! A wide ball outside off, Anderson throws the kitchen sink at it and gets beaten.
  • 102.3A rib tickler this time, James does really well to move out of the way.
  • 102.2A bouncer on the second ball and Anderson ducks under it. He is slow to do so and the ball kisses the helmet and goes into the mitts of the keeper.
  • 102.1So, not a wicket off the first ball as Anderson plays a solid looking back foot defensive stroke.
  • We are all set for the action to begin. Out come the Indian players and with them, Adil Rashid and James Anderson who will resume their innings. The former will be on strike and he will face Hardik Pandya who is starting the proceedings...
  • Michael Atherton catches Jasprit Bumrah for a little interview. The Indian pacer says that the white ball doesn't do a lot but the red ball always helps. Tells that he was looking forward to that and execute his skills. Adds he wants to bowl fast and credits his fitness for that. Feels that the culture is changing back home and many want to become fast bowlers. Says that he has always admired the likes of Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Wasim Akram and Zaheer Khan. Further mentions that they were a bit low on confidence heading into this match but they were focused and wanted to take it a day at a time.
  • Hello and welcome to the coverage of Day 5 of the third Test between England and India. One wicket is all that India need today to keep the series alive. Yes, cricket is a game of uncertainties but one would feel an Indian win is imminent today. The England fans would have started their rain dance as that is the only thing which can save them. It is overcast for now and the away side will be eager to get out there. So, I will ask you once again, how many balls or how many overs will India take to wrap this up? Stay tuned to find out.
  • ... Day 5, Session 1 ...
  • Jasprit Bumrah did break the stand towards the end. The extra half an hour was also claimed but the away side could not get the last wicket. India need only one scalp and they have a total of 90 overs to get it. For England, probably rain can be their only savior but having said that, there are no such predictions for Day 5. So, how many balls or how many overs will India take to wrap this up? Join us tomorrow at 1100 local (1000 GMT) to find out. Till then, take care and goodbye.
  • Earlier Ishant and Bumrah ran through the top order in the morning session. The latter, with the second new ball, wreaked havoc in the evening session as well. He got Buttler and Bairstow with consecutive deliveries and then removed Woakes with a short one a few overs later. Pandya got rid of Ben Stokes, claiming his first wicket in this innings. At that time, it looked like the hosts will make it 2-1 on Day 4 itself but it wasn't to be as Rashid rode his luck and got a couple or reprieves (dismissed off a no ball and then dropped on 22). He battled it out along with Broad and added 50 for the 9th wicket.
  • So, Rashid and Anderson's resistance means, we will be coming to work tomorrow. But what a final session we have witnessed. A session of two halves to be honest. One dominated by the English side, where Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes continued from where they left off in the second session. The two added a massive 169-run stand with the right-hander bringing up his maiden ton. Stokes supported him really well and looked solid throughout. The duo may have revived some hopes of a win or saving this Test in the English camp but the star of Day 4, Jasprit Bumrah, had different ideas.
  • 101.6Rashid keeps the length ball away with a straight bat and that's Stumps on Day 4. 311/9
  • 101.5Rashid has dug out that yorker at the last second.
  • 101.4A play and a miss. A fullish ball around off, Rashid looks to defend it but fails.
  • 101.3On the pads, Anderson works this one to the on side and takes a run. Three balls left in the day and India need one wicket. Can Bumrah finish things off?
  • 101.2Gets behind the line of length ball and keeps it out.
  • 101.1Bouncer! Anderson ducks under the bouncer at the last moment.
  • 100.6Tossed up right up there. Rashid goes after it with an angled but it whizzes past the outside edge to the keeper. 310/9
  • 100.5Not out and it's four leg byes! It's clipping the leg stump but the on-field umpire didn't give it out. It was a carrom ball bowled by Ashwin on the leg stump. It pitches and straightens a touch. Rashid looks to defend but is beaten. The ball hits him high on his pad and an appeal is induced. The umpire has no interest in it. Kohli, in desperation, goes for the review and we all know the story after that.
  • A review has been taken. Rashid is the man in question. Looks to be going down the leg side.
  • 100.4Rashid gets forward and defends it under his eyes.
  • 100.3Rashid fails to connect to the ball. It is bowled slower outside off.
  • 100.2This one comes in with the angle and raps Rashid on his pad. Rashid was forward in defence but failed to connect. An appeal is induced but the umpire isn't interested. India does not take the review.
  • 100.1Flighted on middle and off, Anderson gets it to the on side off the inner half of the bat for a run.
  • Breaking news - Stuart Broad has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for his sendoff to Rishabh Pant.
  • 99.6Another solid defense by Rashid. He gets behind the line and keeps it out off the front foot. 305/9
  • 99.5Wide outside off stump, the batsman leaves it alone.
  • 99.4FOUR! Shot! Another good shot from Rashid. He clips this one through the leg side and takes another boundary. He moves into 30s with this.
  • 99.3On the pads, flicked to the on side for no run.
  • 99.2A peach to come back. Shami bowls it around off, on a back of a length. Rashid hangs his bat at it but it goes past the outside edge to the keeper.
  • 99.1FOUR! Glorious. Rashid has been very watchful in this innings. He has played some extravagant shots and this one is right up there. He stays back and punches the shortish ball through cover-point for a boundary.
  • 98.6The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot. 297/9
  • 98.5Good fielding there. Anderson clips the shortish ball on the pads to the fine leg region but couldn't get it past the fielder there.
  • 98.4Too wide and full, Anderson goes after it but fails.
  • 98.3That missed everything. Bumrah bowls a ripper around off, Anderson looks to hoick it away but the ball goes through bat and pad and misses the stumps by a whisker.
  • 98.2Around off, punched to covers for no run.
  • 98.1On the pads, defended down nicely.
  • 97.6Ooh! Almost. Rashid looks to play the full ball on off across the line but and outside edge is induced. No harm done in the end. 297/9
  • 97.5Gets behind the line of this one and keeps it out.
  • 97.4The batsman shoulders arms to let that one through.
  • 97.3Outside off this time, James plays it to covers and changes strike.
  • 97.2In swinging delivery outside off and jagging back in. Anderson gets an inside edge on to his pad.
  • 97.1FOUR! Top edge but safe! Another short ball for England's premier bowler. He ducks under it but fails to get his bat down. The ball goes off the splice and over the keeper for a boundary.
  • 96.6Wide outside off stump, the batsman leaves it alone. 292/9
  • 96.5Back of a length around off, played to covers for a single.
  • 96.4Good aggressive stuff from Bumrah. He bowls a short ball around the grille Anderson gets on his toes, tries to get his bat behind the line but the extra bounce means it hits his left glove before hitting him on his chin. A proper definition of chin music.
  • 96.3Another beauty! A length ball going across the left-hander. He looks to defend but misses.
  • James Anderson is the last man in.
  • 96.2OUT! Gone, this time he is gone. Finally, the 5-fer Bumrah was waiting for, his second in this format. What a performance from the comeback man! He has demolished England's lower-order with the second new ball ever so easily. Coming to the delivery, it's a length ball in line of the stumps. The angle squares Broad up and the edge of his willow is found. Rahul takes the catch at second slip to complete the formalities. England are 9 down now and a silent send-off for Broad as well.
  • 96.1On a length down the leg, Broad fails to connect to the ball.
  • Bumrah is on for another spell.
  • 95.6The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground. 291/8
  • 95.5Slower through the air, around middle and off, Rashid goes back, counters the spin and keeps it out to the on side for run.
  • 95.4Similar line and length, Rashid lunges forward and blocks it.
  • 95.3Slow around off, defended.
  • 95.2There's that arm ball. Broad hangs his bat at it and gets an inside edge. The ball rolls towards the mid-wicket region and a run is taken.
  • 95.1Watchfully leaves the floated ball outside his off stump.
  • 94.6Full delivery on off, Broad chops it though backward point and a misfield from Ishant there allows the batsmen to run three. 290/8
  • 94.5Too wide and full to entice Broad with a shot.
  • 94.4On a length on off, defended.
  • 94.3Now leaves it alone for the keeper. He is frustrating the visitors.
  • 94.2Again short, Broad ducks under it.
  • 94.1Short of a length on the pads, Broad fails to get bat to ball.
  • Well that should have been Stumps but since England are 8 down, an extra half an hour has been claimed.
  • 93.6Lovely stuff! Another carom ball outside off, Rashid goes back and tries to defend but gets beaten. 287/8
  • 93.5Loopy delivery on off, Rashid prods forward and blocks it.
  • 93.4Slower through the air on off, Rashid lunges and defends it.
  • 93.3The carom ball outside off, the batsman lets it be.
  • 93.2Floats it up on the pads, Rashid pads it away.
  • 93.1The straighter one outside off, Rashid plays for the non-existent turn and gets beaten.
  • Ashwin is on.
  • 92.6FOUR! Full, wide and punished. Kohli isn't amused, not a bit. Broad does well to connect with the ball with an angled bat and get it through backward point for a boundary. 287/8
  • 92.5Gets behind the line of this one and manages to keep it down.
  • 92.4Shortish around off, defended.
  • 92.3A wild slog across the line, Broad gets an inside edge onto his pads.
  • 92.2An easy leave to the ball down the leg side. Pant fails to collect it and a bye is stolen.
  • 92.1The batsman was beaten and missed the line of the delivery.
  • 91.6Again short, over the stumps, Broad fails to connect with it this time. 282/8
  • 91.5FOUR! Another short ball and Broad backs away from his crease and pulls it hard. The ball races to the square leg fence for consecutive boundaries. 3000 runs up for Stuart Broad in Test cricket.
  • 91.4FOUR! Short ball, a rib tickler, Broad sways and plays it fine to the boundary. Runs are coming thick and fast at the moment.
  • 91.3Broad sways from the line of the short ball and lets it be for the keeper.
  • 91.2Wide and short, left alone.
  • 91.1Short outside off, Broad plays it through backward point and takes a brace.
  • Ishant Sharma is brought back to have a go.
  • 90.6DROPPED! A sharp chance but it should have been grabbed! Rashid is living a life of a cat here. Second reprieve for him. This is full and outside off, swinging away. Rashid goes after it but gets an outside edge. It flies to third slip, Virat Kohli there gets two hands to it but spills it. 272/8
  • 90.5On the pads, Broad tries to flick but it goes off the pads towards fine leg and the batsmen run a leg bye.
  • 90.4Short ball, Rashid is not backing away from playing the pull. He also plays it well towards deep square leg for a run.
  • 90.3Shorter in length on off, Adil guides it to point.
  • 90.2BEAUTY! Angles this into the batter and then gets it to leave him. Rashid is beaten as he tries to defend it.
  • 90.1Good length on off, Rashid gets his bat down in time and keeps it out.
  • Mohammed Shami is back on.
  • 89.6That's hit the batsman on his pads. They pick up a single. Leg byes given by the umpire. 270/8
  • 89.5Another play and miss. Rashid is not hanging around. He wants to have his fun it seems. David Lloyd on commentary says that he is trying to nick one but isn't able to. A length ball outside off, Rashid swings hard but connects with thin air.
  • 89.4Ooh! A play and a miss. Rashid goes after the shortish delivery around his off stumps but fails to get bat to ball.
  • 89.3FOUR! What. A. Shot. Rashid flicks the full ball on his pads to square leg fence with utter disdain. He has played some exquisite shots here in his little innings as of now.
  • 89.2Outside off, Rashid swings but misses.
  • 89.1Squares him up here. A length ball in line of the stumps, Rashid looks to clip it through the leg side but only manages an outside edge to gully.
  • 88.6Another short ball and another pull from Rashid. This time there is a man at deep backward square leg to keep it down to one. 11 came off this one. 265/8
  • 88.5SIX! Rashid is swinging his way out of trouble. He gets a short ball in line of the stumps, pulls it but gets a top edge. The ball sails into the fine leg fence for a maximum.
  • 88.4FOUR! Shortish around off, Rashid again stays on the leg side of the ball and carcasses it through covers for a boundary.
  • 88.3The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 88.2Outside off, on a length, Rashid fails to connect to the ball.
  • 88.1Hangs back and keeps it out.
  • 87.6Shows the full face of the bat and keeps it out off the back foot. Broad survives. 254/8
  • 87.5Another short ball, Broad ducks under it again.
  • 87.4Bouncer! Broad ducks in time to let that one go over him.
  • 87.3Fullish on off, driven to covers for no run.
  • 87.2Shortish around off again, defended.
  • 87.1Full, going away from Broad. He fails to get bat to ball.
  • 86.6Adil goes for the pull but misses it completely. So, end of an exciting over. England could've been 9 down but wasn't to be. 254/8
  • 86.5FOUR! Punched and punched handsomely. Rashid lines up the shortish ball outside his off pole and punches it through covers. The ball races away to the fence. Bumrah needs to calm himself down and get back to his normal line and length.
  • 86.4Gets behind the line of this one and keeps it out of the back foot.
  • 86.3Four Leg Byes! Rashid gets a short of a length ball on the hips, he looks to clip it fine but the ball goes off his thigh pad to the boundary.
  • 86.3It's a no ball. Dear me, Bumrah denies himself a 5-fer. He bowls a beauty around off, on a length and manages to induce Rashid's outside edge. Kohli takes a sharp catch in the slip cordon. Everyone started to celebrate. Rashid starts to walk back but the umpire says hang on! He checks the no ball. The giant screen shows there ain't much behind the popping crease. Touch and go really when seen from multiple angles. Rashid survives to fight another day or over...
  • A no ball is being checked. Rashid is caught behind but the umpire is doubtful about Bumrah's front foot.
  • 86.2Shortish on off, Rashid stays to the leg side of the ball and punches it through cover-point for a brace.
  • 86.1Full on leg, Broad gets a thick edge and through the off side for a run.
  • 85.6The batsman flicks it away with a wristy shot. The batsmen have run through for a single. 242/8
  • Stuart Broad is the new man in.
  • 85.5OUT! They are now falling like a pack of cards! From 231 for 4, they are now 241 for 8. India only two wickets away. Ben Stokes walks back after playing a gritty knock. The second new ball has worked wonders for the Indians here. Hardik Pandya, the hero of the first innings, gets his first. Just like the last delivery, he makes excellent use of the angle and lands it around off, this one slants away. Stokes is squared up as he tries to defend, the ball takes the outside edge and goes towards second slip who makes no mistake. Who is the fielder there? You probably must have guessed it right - KL RAHUL. He takes his third catch of the innings. The Indians are pumped up and they now can surely sniff a victory today, 13.1 overs to go.
  • 85.4Lovely line! On off and uses the angle well by angling it away. Stokes tries to defend but gets beaten.
  • 85.3Bowled on off, Ben lunges and keeps it out.
  • 85.2Fuller in length outside off, Stokes strokes it towards covers.
  • 85.1Way outside off, Stokes leaves it.
  • 84.6Some chin music for Rashid, he lets that bouncer through to the wicket-keeper. 241/7
  • 84.5Short ball again, Rashid just about keeps it down.
  • 84.4OUT! Another one bites the dust. Bumrah is on fire. Unplayable, this. He digs in a short ball, targeting the grille of Woakes. Pandya mentioned in an interview that Woakes has a problem with the short ball and Bumrah kept that in his mind. He puts Woakes in a tangle who tries to evade it but does not get his bat out of the way. The ball kisses his gloves and Pant takes a jumping catch behind. England are 7 down now.
  • 84.3On the pads, worked to the on side for a run.
  • 84.2Full around middle and odd, driven to mid on for no run.
  • 84.1Outside off, left alone.
  • 83.6Length again on off, the batsman guides it through point and gets to the other end. 240/6
  • 83.5FOUR! Wrong line! Down the leg side and Stokes tickles it fine down the leg side.
  • 83.4Back of a length again on off, Stokes keeps it out off the back foot.
  • 83.3Length again on off, Stokes defends it on the ground.
  • 83.2Good length around off, angling away. The batsman leaves it.
  • 83.1On the shorter side outside off, Stokes tries to drag his pull but gets an inside edge onto his body.
  • 82.6Drives the full ball to mid on to end a successful over for India. 235/6
  • 82.5FOUR! Woakes survives the hat-trick ball. Not only survives, he clips it through mid-wicket for a boundary. So, two wickets followed by a boundary. What next?
  • Chris Woakes is in. A short leg is in place for him along with a shortish mid-wicket fielder.
  • 82.4OUT! Two in two. Are you kidding me? What a peach to bowl to a new batsman. This is unplayable. Bairstow has no chance of getting any bat to it. WOW! Bumrah is spitting fire here. He lands one on a length around off and gets it to straighten from there. Bairstow plays the line but the ball goes past the outside edge of his bat and rattles the off pole. What a jaffa! England, all of a sudden, six down and they are still 290 runs behind. Hat-trick ball coming up!
  • Jonny Bairstow, with a fractured left middle finger, walks in to bat.
  • 82.3OUT! Buttler walks after a magnificent innings. He managed to keep the Indian bowlers at bay along with Stokes with a record-breaking 169-run partnership but he resistance finally ends. Coming to the ball - It was fullish around off, coming in with the angle and Buttler left it. That was his undoing. The ball kept on coming in and hit him on his knee roll. Bumrah started celebrating straightaway and the umpire raises his finger without any doubt in his mind. Buttler goes for a desperate review. The replays roll in. It is clipping the top of the stumps and that's all Bumrah and India needed. A breakthrough for the tourists after what felt like ages. Can they run through the lower order now?
  • A review has been taken by Buttler. He has been given out by the umpire. Looks plumb!
  • 82.2On a length on off, defended down the track.
  • 82.1Shortish on middle and off, Stokes works it through backward point for an easy single.
  • 81.6Easily leaves the ball outside his off stump. 230/4
  • 81.5The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • 81.4FOUR Leg Byes! Highest fourth innings partnership for the 5th wicket for England. Swing but wrong line. It pitches on middle and swings further down the leg side. The ball clips the pad on the way to the fine leg fence for a boundary. The umpire signals a leg bye.
  • 81.3That's more like it. Full around off, Stokes hangs his bat at it, off the front foot and the ball takes a thickish outside edge. It goes through the backward point region for a run.
  • 81.2The ball is too wide on the off side for Stokes to make any contact who lets it be.
  • 81.1On the hips, tucked through deep backward square leg for a brace. Not the line you want to bowl with the new ball.
  • 80.6Full on middle and off, driven to mid of for no run. 223/4
  • 80.5Geez! That went over the off stump. Comes in with the angle and Buttler leaves it on length. It's good leave considering it went over. Pheew! So close, yet so far.
  • 80.4The batsman lets the ball go outside his off stump.
  • 80.3In the air... just short! 98 percent of the time it was in the air and it just dropped in front of Shami at mid off. New ball coming on much faster and going off the bat as well. Buttler looks to punch the shortish ball through the off side. The connection is too sweet for his liking here. Luckily for him, it falls short of the fielder at mid off.
  • 80.2Another leave. Outside off, on a length, Buttler lets it be.
  • 80.1Short of a length ball outside off, Buttler does not fiddle with the new cherry.
  • Jasprit Bumrah is back on.

  • 75.5FOUR! And he gets there in style! Maiden ton in Tests for Jos Buttler and what a time to get it. A special knock by a special player. Justifying his selection in the team. Not to forget he was dropped on one and he has made full use of the reprieve. Shami provides a gift to help him get to his milestone. On the pads, Buttler flicks it through square leg and the ball races away. He takes his helmet off, raises his bat and soaks in the applause from the crowd and his teammates. Also, Virat Kohli is seen clapping for him, good gesture from the Indian skipper. Buttler though should now try and make it a daddy one, probably a double hundred.

  • ... DAY 4, 3RD SESSION ...
  • Put all the talks to bed that England won't last another session. They have done it and they have done it in style. The pair of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler showed tremendous resilience to bat out the entire session. There were a few nervy moments but they braved everything and are amidst a 111-run stand. You just need 99 percent application and 1 percent luck on this pitch and that's what the current duo showed. India toiled hard without much success but won't be too disappointed. Their bowling was top notch and they would look to turn things around in the evening. Do join us in a short while for more action.

Time for the replays and it shows the ball to be missing leg.

Misses to get rapped on the pads, they appeal but nothing from the umpire. Bumrah then looks towards his skipper and signals that it's going down. Good to see a bowler aware of these things and helping his skipper out with the DRS call. Not getting carried away in such situations is the key. Well done, JB! 148/4

  • 43.4The batsman has played it to the point region. The batsmen have run through for a single.
  • 43.3Wide outside off, the batsman is not in the mood to play those.
  • 43.2Another strong push! On off, Stokes plants his front foot forward and pushes it through mid off for three.
  • 43.1Down the leg side, Stokes misses the flick.
  • 42.6Like that! He is solid in defense here as he guides it towards point. 106/4
  • 42.5On the off stump, Buttler defends it off the back foot. He looks well organized out there. Knows which ball to leave, which ball to defend and which ball to put away.
  • 42.4Good delivery! On the 5th stump channel. Buttler though knows where his off stump is, covers it and leaves the ball.
  • 42.3The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • 42.2FOUR! Finds the gap this time and you just need not run for those. Full and on off, Buttler caresses it through covers. He moves to 27, how costly will that drop from Pant prove?
  • 42.1Fuller on off, it is hit to covers.
  • 41.6A silly mid on in place and he is straightaway into the thick of things. Another fuller delivery on middle, Stokes with a straight bat hits it to that man. 102/4
  • 41.5The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 41.4Attacks the stumps again, Stokes gets behind the line and blocks it.
  • 41.3FOUR! Second boundary of the over! Not such a bad delivery, it was on a length and around off, Stokes leans into it and punches it right off the middle, beating the outstretched left hand of Ishant and into the long on fence. 100 up for England, however, not even half the job is done. They still need another 419.
  • 41.2Very full on off, Stokes lunges and defends it.
  • 41.1FOUR! Poor ball and put away! On the pads, Ben Stokes is too good to miss out there. He flicks it through square leg and the ball races away.
  • 40.6A bumper, the first one of this session. Stokes though was up to the task as he pulls it down to fine leg and keeps strike. 94/4
  • 40.5Sign of intent there by Stokes. He walks down the track and also shuffles across. Pandya bowls it on the stumps, Ben works it to mid-wicket.
  • 40.4Over the wicket, around the wicket does not matter. The line is way outside off, Stokes points his bat skywards and makes a leave.
  • 40.4Changes the angle as he comes around the wicket. He though oversteps and bowls it on a length outside off. Stokes lets it be. No ball signalled.
  • 40.3A little too full, maybe that length to give the ball more time to do its bit. It though goes straight on and Stokes drives it to mid off, no misfield this time.
  • 40.2Better! This is what has to be bowled on a consistent basis! Length and on off, Stokes tries to defend but gets an inside edge towards the leg side.
  • 40.1Fuller in length and outside off, Stokes leaves it.
  • 39.6Bowls it just ahead of a length on off, Buttler blocks it out. 92/4
  • 39.5FOUR! A valiant effort by Jadeja but it goes in vain! Excellent timing by Buttler. He leans into the fuller ball and strokes it through covers. Jadeja, the substitute, hares after it, dives and tries to push it back in but is not able to do so.
  • 39.4Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • Mohammed Shami after that fall is going off the field. Umesh Yadav is his substitute. India will hope it is nothing series with Ravichandran Ashwin already not fully fit.
  • 39.3Outside off, Buttler need not play. Ishant does not look that effective against the right-handers.
  • 39.2Misfield and three extra runs! Ishant won't be happy as he loves bowling to left-handers and now Stokes is off strike. He bowls it on a length around off, Stokes pushes it towards Shami at mid on, he misfields and then runs after the ball, stops it before the ropes with a tumble. The batsmen run three.
  • 39.1Straightaway goes around the wicket to the left-hander and bowls a yorker on off, Stokes jams it out.
  • 38.6Another dot! On the stumps, Buttler defends it to mid off. 85/4
  • 38.5Angles this into the batsman, Buttler pushes it back from where it came. 47 balls is what Buttler has faced till now. This probably is his most patient innings.
  • 38.4And that is why! Pandya bowls a lovely outswinger on off, Buttler plays for the original trajectory but is beaten by the movement.
  • An extra man added in the slip cordon for the right-hander which means one fielder less in front of the bat on the off side.
  • 38.3A single and a big cheer goes around the stadium. It has come after 20 balls post Lunch. Just behind the fuller length on off, Stokes mistimes it towards mid off and takes a quick run.
  • 38.2Just ahead of a length on off, Stokes shows the full face of the bat and hits it to mid on.
  • 38.1Bends his back on this one and bowls it shorter on middle, Stokes tries to flick but is beaten for pace. He gets hit high on the thigh pad.
  • 37.6Well fielded! Shami is the man with a very good effort, saves a boundary for his side. Full and on off, in fact a half-volley. Buttler times it towards mid off. Shami there dives across to his left and stops it. Third maiden in a row. 84/4
  • 37.5Again way too outside off, left alone. The Indian bowlers are not making the batsman play here. Need to be a little more closer to the off pole.
  • 37.4A little too wide outside off to make the batsman play.
  • 37.3Attacks the off pole again, Buttler is solid in defense.
  • 37.2Back of a length on off, Buttler off the back foot keeps it out.
  • 37.1Pitches on off and then comes back in. Buttler with the movement works it to mid-wicket.
  • 36.6A good delivery to end the over! On a length and around off, kept out. A maiden by Pandya to begin with but not a threatening one. 84/4
  • 36.5Way too wide outside off, Stokes is in no mood to play at those.
  • 36.4Full on off but once again no swing. Stokes pushes it to mid off.
  • 36.3Again it is bowled outside off, the batsman need not play at those. Not quite getting the same assistance as he did in the first innings.
  • 36.2Goes very full on middle, Stokes works it to mid on.
  • 36.1He too starts off with a loosener outside off, Stokes lets it be.
  • Hardik Pandya to bowl from the other end.
  • 35.6A dot to end a tight over by Ishant! On a length again on off, Buttler tucks it with the angle to mid-wicket. 84/4
  • 35.5This tails back in but the line is a little too straight. Buttler works it to mid-wicket.
  • 35.4BEAUTY! This time he angles it into the off stump, it pitches and then straightens. Buttler plays inside the line and gets beaten.
  • 35.3Closer to the off pole this time but not close enough to make the batsman play.
  • 35.2Another ball way outside off, no inswing this time also. Buttler shoulders arms to it.
  • 35.1Starts off with a wide ball outside off, trying to get it come back in. This goes straight on and Buttler makes an easy leave.
  • We are back for the afternoon session. Out walk the Indian players along with the umpires. They are followed by the English batters, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, who will resume their innings. The latter will be on strike and he will face Ishant Sharma first up. Here we go...
  • ... Day 4, Session 2 ...
  • A special mention to India's slip catching, which has been immaculate in this match. KL Rahul hasn't dropped any catches and has made the second slip position his own. The only blemish this morning was Buttler's drop by Pant, who, otherwise, is having a dream debut with six catches in the match as of now (a record for an Indian wicket-keeper). The opposition is on the mat is putting the equation lightly. The afternoon session should clear out the picture even more. Get some popcorn and a coffee perhaps. We'll see you after the Lunch break.
  • The morning, the session, and at the moment, the Test belongs to India. They were dominant with the ball throughout the morning. The breakthroughs came earlier as Ishant removed Jennings in the first over itself, and made Cook walk as well in the third over of the morning. Root and Pope hung around till the drinks break but just after it, both were removed in successive overs by Bumrah and Shami respectively.
  • 34.6A close leave to end the session. Ashwin bowls it seam up, landing outside off and skidding in. Stokes covers his stumps and then makes a leave. Time for Lunch on Day 4! 84/4
  • 34.5This time the off spinner pulls his length back and serves it around middle and off. Stokes pushes his weight on the back foot and keeps it out on the off side.
  • 34.4Ashwin goes full and drops it on middle, Stokes jams it out.
  • 34.3Tossed up and on off, Stokes covers the spin and defends it from the crease.
  • 34.2Around off, once again Stokes blocks it well.
  • 34.1Flighted and full on off, Stokes defends it off his front foot. There is a leg gully in the vicinity too.
  • 33.6Solid this time. Gets behind the line of the delivery and blocks it safely. 84/4
  • 33.5Appeal for an lbw, not given. Sharp movement from a length outside off. It jags back in, Buttler stays back and offers no shot. Takes a blow on his pads, they appeal but nothing from the umpire. Too high.
  • 33.4FOUR! But that was a risky one. Shami lures Buttler into a cover drive. He does so but fails to keep it down. Rahane stationed at covers dives full length to his right but it's out of his range. The ball screams away to the fence. Nice camerawork to show Shami jumping in anticipation along with Rahane.
  • 33.3FOUR! Wanted to play that shot always but not sure that fine. A delivery angling into the batsman, around middle and leg, Buttler tickles it off the inside half of the bat to the fine leg fence.
  • 33.2Good stop by Kohli. A length ball outside off, Buttler pushes inside the line and edges it behind. It doesn't carry to third slip but the Indian skipper does well to stop it from racing away.
  • 33.1FOUR! Nicely played! Shami digs in a short ball on middle and off, not rising much, Buttler swivels with his pull shot and dismisses it in front of square leg for a boundary.
  • 32.6Firm hands and another inside edge. Buttler leans forward to defend but it spins back in to take the inside edge. It hurries past short leg and they cross. 72/4
  • 32.5Bat and pad this time. Another slider which takes the inside edge. It rolls in the gap square on the leg side. They take a run this time.
  • 32.4Slider around middle and leg, Stokes tries to defend but gets it away off the inside edge. A thought given for a run but they decide against it.
  • 32.3Tossed up on off, Stokes has played that off the front foot and into the ground.
  • 32.2Nicely tossed up delivery. Landing very full and around off, Stokes covers the line and defends again. Not using his hips much while giving it a toss because of the injury he is carrying.
  • 32.1Flighted full and on middle, Stokes gets behind the line and blocks it.
  • Ravichandran Ashwin into the attack now. Two slips and a silly point to begin with.
  • 31.6Play and a miss! A hint of away movement around off, Buttler pokes inside the line and misses. 70/4
  • 31.5Keeps it in the area outside off and Buttler has nothing to do with it.
  • 31.4FOUR! Soft hands. Shami bowls it just ahead of a length around off, Buttler gets forward to play inside the line and does so with a gentle bottom hand. As a result, the outside edge goes all along the ground past the slip cordon for a boundary. Virat Kohli isn't bothered much and claps for his bowler.
  • 31.3An inswinger this time. It lands on a good length just outside off, Buttler stays back, keeps his bat near his body and defends it to the off side.
  • 31.2Closer to the off stump. Slightly short in length and holding its line, Buttler covers the line and shoulders arms.
  • 31.1Delivers a length ball in the channel outside off, a watchful leave has been made by Buttler.
  • 30.6Angling into the batsman, from around off, Stokes flicks it off his pads but finds the square leg fielder. 66/4
  • 30.5Good length and on off, this time Stokes gets behind the line and blocks it.
  • 30.4This will seed some doubt in Stokes' mind. Pandya lands it on a length around off, Stokes gets a little bit forward and then makes a leave. After he does so, the ball moves back in considerably and wasn't too far away from the off pole. Pant does well to catch the ball by stretching to his right.
  • 30.3Too wide outside off to trouble the batsman.
  • 30.2On a good length this time, in the zone outside off, Stokes covers his stumps and shoulders arms.
  • 30.1Pandya changes his angle and delivers a full ball close to off stump. Stokes gets forward and across a bit before keeping it out on the leg side.
  • 29.6Gets on the front foot and defends it on the off side. 66/4
  • 29.5Serves it on a length and in the channel outside off, moving away a shade, Buttler has nothing to do with it.
  • 29.4Straighter in line this time, Buttler cover the angle and defends it to mid-wicket.
  • 29.3Goes short and wide outside off, another leave made by Jos.
  • 29.2In the channel outside off, Buttler allows it through.
  • 29.1The batsman lets the ball go outside his off stump.
  • 28.6Stokes chooses to leave the ball outside his off stump. 66/4
  • 28.5Around off, Stokes plays at it with soft hands and hence the outside edge doesn't carry to gully.
  • 28.4Beaten! Pandya continues to bowl it full and outside off, Ben pushes at it and misses.
  • 28.3Pandya keeps it full and invites the drive. Stokes mistimes it back to the bowler.
  • 28.2Bowls it right up there around off, Stokes covers the line and defends.
  • 28.1Starts with a fuller length ball on off, Stokes blocks it.
  • Hardik Pandya into the attack. He picked up a fifer in the first innings and would be hoping to add to his tally.
  • 27.6Shortish on off, Buttler pushes it with an angled bat to point. 66/4
  • 27.5Beaten! The angle does him in. Shami straightens it from just outside the off stump line. Buttler gets forward to defend inside the line but misses.
  • 27.4Once again Buttler defends from the crease.
  • 27.3On a good length and around off, Buttler defends it from the crease.
  • 27.2Another delivery outside off stump, it's left alone by Jos.
  • 27.1Short in length and outside off, Buttler shoulders arms.
  • 26.6Full and around off, Stokes defends it watchfully to end the over. 66/4
  • 26.5Stays back and taps it down to covers for one.
  • 26.4Dropped! We jinxed their catching, it seems. Rishabh Pant, the culprit. Bumrah uses the crease so well. Goes wide of it and angles it in. Full in length and Buttler outside edges his drive behind. Pant fails to catch the ball with a full length dive. Got a bit wrong-footed. He was moving to his left with the angle of the delivery but then the outside edge got generated and it went low to his right. A repeat of the first innings. Something the young man needs to work on.
  • 26.3Hurls in a length ball in the channel outside off, Jos shoulders arms.
  • 26.2Good length ball on off, Buttler defends it from the crease back towards the bowler.
  • 26.1The batsman flicks it away with a wristy shot. They pick up a single.
  • 25.6Good length ball on off, Buttler defends it off his back foot. Good bowling by India from both ends. 64/4
  • 25.5Serves it full and outside off, Stokes pushes it in the gap at covers and gets off the mark with a single.
  • 25.4Straighter in line, it's worked off the pads in front of square leg for a single.
  • 25.3Chooses to leave the ball outside his off stump.
  • 25.2Bowls it on a length outside off, Jos lets it be first up.
  • Jos Buttler is in.
  • 25.1OUT! Virat Kohli flies like Superman and takes a ripper. Let me repeat, India's slip catching has improved by leaps and bounds in this match. If Rahul's catch was tremendous then this catch was a notch up. Shami sticks to his line outside off, maybe a little bit of away movement once it kisses the deck, Ollie Pope chances his luck with a drive this time. However, he keeps all his weight on the back foot, something which we have been pointing out throughout his innings. As a result, there isn't a proper transfer of weight into the drive and an outside edge is induced. It hurries towards the slip cordon where Kohli (from third slip) dives across to his left and pouches it in front of second slip. India are all pumped up, they need 6 more wickets to get off the mark in this Test series.
  • 24.6Keeps it on a length and around off, Ben once again blocks it safely from the back foot. End of a successful over, a wicket maiden. 62/3
  • 24.5On a length around off, defended off the back foot.
  • 24.4Shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • Ben Stokes arrives.
  • 24.3OUT! This is a tremendous catch by KL Rahul. India have improved exceptionally well with their catching in this Test match, especially in the slip cordon. A needless push by Root though. He batted well so far, was very cautious while leaving deliveries outside his off stump. But this time he got sucked into one. Bumrah serves it on a back of a length outside off, holding its line, Root tries to punch it off his back foot but gets a fat outside edge behind to second slip. It's travelling and KL Rahul stationed there does nicely to stretch his hands out to his right to grab the catch. He straightaway runs in joy and does a 'Delle Alli challenge' celebration towards one of his teammates in the dressing room.
  • 24.2Bumrah doesn't shy away from bowling yorkers even though it's not fashionable in Tests. Root reaches out for it and digs it out safely.
  • 24.1Bumrah continues to put England under pressure. He is bowling a great line and length. This one is angled into the right-hander, a hint of movement off the deck as well. Root tries defending but gets an inside edge onto the pads. This is an outstanding battle between bat and ball.
  • 23.6Lands it short and close to off stump, Ollie taps it with gentle hands to backward point. 62/2
  • 23.5A watchful leave outside the off stump by Pope. Quite assured, this young man.
  • 23.4Shami delivers it on a good length and just around off, holding its line, Pope takes his front leg forward, knows where his off stump is and then shoulders arms. That's a sign of a good batsman.
  • 23.3Lovely delivery, gets it to jag back in from a length outside off. Pope tries defending but gets an inside edge onto the thigh pad.
  • 23.2Defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery.
  • 23.1In the channel outside off, a harmless one, Pope shoulders arms.
  • 22.6In the air...safe! Heart in mouth stuff for the English skipper. Bumrah eyes a yorker probably but fails to land it. A low full toss as it approaches the batsman and Root is taken by surprise. He tries keeping it out but does so aerially. It loops towards mid on but wide of Ashwin stationed there. 62/2
  • 22.5Unplayable. Bumrah bowls this one from wide of the crease. He slants in a length ball from outside off, Root tries playing inside the line from the crease but the angle doesn't bring the ball in enough. It goes tantalizingly close past the outside edge.
  • 22.4A scream more than an appeal from the keeper. Bumrah bowls a yorker wide outside off, Root tries to squeeze it out but is late in bringing his bat down. Misses. Pant though collects the ball and lets out a joyous-screaming-appeal. Nothing doing as far as the umpire is concerned.
  • 22.3Excellent delivery, landing on a full length outside off and nipping away. An easy leave though for Joe. Bumrah needs to get a bit closer to off stump to trouble the batsman more.
  • 22.2Outside off, played down from the crease to point.
  • 22.1Good length ball landing around off and angling in, Root gets behind the line and blocks.
  • Drinks! The first hour of the day's play belongs to Ishant and India. He bowled superb lines and lengths and dismissed both the openers. The English skipper Root is on the crease, gutting it out with Pope. They are still 459 runs behind.
  • 21.6Root opens the face of the bat and helps it to third man. The batsmen have run through for a single. 62/2
  • 21.5Not a shot you'd expect Root to play. He is the man for England and he cannot afford to play such loose shots. Shami bowls this wide and on a back of a length, Root attempts the cut away from his body but fails to connect. His counterpart is applauding his bowlers and cheering them on.
  • 21.4Gets closer to the off pole on a fullish length. Root defends it.
  • 21.3On a length, swinging away, Root does not fiddle with it.
  • 21.2Again outside off, on a length, Root lets it be.
  • 21.1Outside off, left alone.
  • 20.6Defends the back of a length ball down the track for no run. 61/2
  • 20.5Pope shoulders arms to let that one through.
  • 20.4Ooh! Inside edge saved him there it seems. It was bowled a touch fuller in line of the stumps, Pope, as usual, looks to play from within his crease. He gets an inside edge onto his pad.
  • 20.3The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • 20.2That's what you get with Bumrah. His natural angle creates a lot of trouble. He bowls it way outside off on a back of a length. The ball ends up on off where Pope defends it off the back foot.
  • 20.1Short, targeting the grille, Root hooks it and keeps it down. The ball goes to the deep square leg region and a run is taken.
  • 19.6Shortish around off, worked to point and scampered for a run. A direct hit at the strikers end would have made it close but it wasn't to be. 9 coming off Shami's first over. 60/2
  • 19.5Again full, driven to mid on for no run.
  • 19.4FOUR! Shot! Crisp. A full ball, a half volley rather. Root plants his front foot down and creams the drive through covers for the second boundary of the over.
  • 19.3Gets behind the line and defends it.
  • 19.2FOUR! On the pads and punished. Root won't miss out on such looseners. He flicks it through square leg and the ball races to the fence.
  • 19.1The batsman chooses to leave the ball outside his off stump.
  • Mohammed Shami is on.
  • 18.6FOUR! Easy-peasy for Pope. A back of a length ball on the hips, Pope guides it to fine leg and takes a boundary. 51/2
  • 18.5Good ploy, make him Hop! Another shortish ball in line of the stumps, Pope hops and manages to keep it down.
  • 18.4Outside off, left alone.
  • 18.3Short of a length on off, blocked.
  • 18.2Again that defense with his feet glued in his crease. This creates a huge gap between bat and pad. He defends it on the track.
  • 18.1This one comes in with the angle. Pope manages to keep it down with a straight bat.
  • 17.6Good, clever stuff from Pope. He pushes the length ball to the off side and keeps the strike. 47/2
  • 17.5Shortish around off, Root defends it to the vacant cover region and takes a quick single.
  • 17.4Fullish, moving away from Root. He works it to point with an angled.
  • 17.3Wrists a length ball to the on side. Pope changes strike.
  • 17.2On a length around off, defended.
  • 17.1In line of the stumps, Root fails to put bat to ball and gets hit on his pads. A leg bye stolen.
  • 16.6Ollie has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. 43/2
  • 16.5Pope is staying put in his crease and just getting his bat behind the line to defend. I feel it is a matter of time before he edges one if he does not move his feet. He defends this length ball from his crease to the off side.
  • 16.4Angled delivery outside off, defended.
  • 16.3Fullish around off, driven back to the bowler.
  • Ben Stokes is seen all set to bat next in the dressing room which means Jonny Bairstow won't be coming in next. Though the news we have is he is fit to bat but we're not sure when.
  • 16.2Still no short leg in place and Bumrah is getting the ball to come in sharply. Pope gets and inside edge on to his pad. Are India missing a trick here?
  • 16.1The batsman shows the full face of the bat and defends the ball off the back foot.
  • 15.6Full on off, driven to mid off. 43/2
  • 15.5Counters the away swing and pushes it to the vacant cover region for a quick single.
  • 15.4Stays back and keeps the length ball out with a straight bat.
  • 15.3Swings into Pope and hits him high on his thigh pad. No short leg in place. Hmm...
  • 15.2The batsman chooses to leave the ball outside his off stump.
  • 15.1Ollie tries flicking a ball that is down the leg side but fails.
  • 14.6The batsman defends it from within the crease. 42/2
  • 14.5Root picked that bouncer early and let it through to the keeper.
  • 14.4Wide of off, on a length, pushed to backward point for another run.
  • 14.3On middle and off, tucked to mid-wicket for a run.
  • 14.2Uufff! Still no edge of Root's bat. Bumrah keeps it around off, on just short of a length, Root looks to punch but fails, again.
  • 14.1Around off, on a length, defended.
  • 13.6Shows the full face and keeps it out under his eyes. 40/2
  • 13.5Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat.
  • 13.4In line of the stumps, flicked to the on side for no run.
  • 13.3Edged and FOUR! Around off, on a length, Pope goes with hard hands from his crease and gets a thick outside edge. The ball races to the third man fence for a boundary.
  • 13.2And the procession of a play and a miss continues. This time it's Pope. Sharma dishes this on a length outside off and gets it to come back in just a tad. Pope plays the line but fails to connect.
  • 13.1FOUR! Driven and driven nicely. A full ball on off, Pope punches it off the front foot and gets it down the ground nicely for a boundary. He is a very confident young man, so far has not got big scores to his name but there is promise.
  • 12.6Finally a leave outside the off stump. Root survives! 32/2
  • 12.5Another play and a miss and still no edge. Root should consider himself lucky. Bumrah is probing in the same channel and making Root dance like a doll.
  • 12.4Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
  • 12.3Squares him up there. A back of a length delivery in line of the stumps and moving away from Root. He goes across the line but a leading edge is found as the ball goes to the point region. In the end, no harm done.
  • 12.2Kidding me? Still no edge. Similar delivery from Bumrah and similar kind of shot from Root but he again fails to put bat to ball.
  • 12.1Geez! Bumrah, you beauty. Juts outside off, on a length and he angles it in. The ball holds its line and goes ever so closely past Root's defensive bat.
  • Ollie Pope is the next batsman in.
  • 11.6OUT! Boom! Fireworks all around. What a start from Ishant. Wow! He has made Cook his bunny. This is the 11th time he has dismissed him in Tests and what a beauty to remove him. Similar kind of delivery that got Jennings earlier. He gets it to straighten from around the wicket. Cook could have left it alone but on the contrary, he pokes at it tentatively. An edge is induced and straight into the safe hands of Rahul at second slip. England's most experienced, highest run-getter and most prolific batsman is walking back. India on the charge. 32/2
  • 11.5The batsman shoulders arms to let that one through.
  • 11.4FOUR! Nicely caressed through covers by Cook. He gets a full ball and does the rest. No chance for the fielder there to get anywhere near it.
  • 11.3Juts outside off this time, Cook pushes it to the off side off the back foot.
  • 11.2Similar length and similar shot played by Cook for no run.
  • 11.1Short of a length, on off, blocked.
  • 10.6A solid defense presented by Root. He gets behind the line and blocks easily. Just one off this one. 28/1
  • 10.5Shows the full face and keeps it out.
  • 10.4Cook gets back and works the shortish ball to the on side for a run.
  • 10.3Ooh! Cracker! Bumrah is on the money. He pushes this one at 140 kph and lets it rip. The ball lands around off and just whizzes past Cook's hanging bat. Close, very close but no edge.

  • 10.1The ball is way wide on the leg side but Cook still goes after it but misses.
  • Jasprit Bumrah is on. He has three slips and a short leg in place. Attack is the call!
  • 9.6The ball is too wide on the off side for Root to make any contact. He lets it be. So, that's the end of a successful over for Ishant. 27/1
  • Joe Root comes to the crease with his side in trouble.
  • 9.5OUT! Gone! Ishant Sharma draws first blood. What a cracker, this! He bowls this on a back of a length on off and gets it to move away just a tad. Jennings plays inside the line from his crease and ends up getting an outside edge. Rishabh Pant completes the formalities and now has the most dismissals for an Indian wicket-keeper on a Test debut. Sharma did err in line for a couple of deliveries but he got back to his normal length and reaped the rewards. Jennings couldn't have done much to this though. It would have got out the best of the best. Is this the end of Jennings?
  • 9.4Full on off, driven to covers.
  • 9.3Ishant straying in line, dishes this one on the pads. Cook clips it nicely through square leg and takes three. First runs off the bat this morning.
  • 9.2A tad too straight on the hips, Jennings gets hit on his thigh pad and steals a run. The umpire signals a leg bye.
  • 9.1What an absolute peach to start the proceedings. A jaffa around off, just short of a length. Jennings hangs his bat but gets beaten. Great start!
  • We are about to get underway. Cook and Jennings are out in the middle and so are the Indian team. Ishant will start the proceedings. Three slips and a gully in place. Here we go...
  • Cheteshwar Pujara gives a little insight on his Day 3's innings. He says although he didn't get many runs earlier, he was confident. Adds that he missed out on a hundred but he is content with the runs he scored. Asserts that playing in the county season was challenging but it was a good preparation for him. States the obvious that Virat Kohli is a great player and no one can play the drives like he does, that too in England. On Ashwin's fitness, Pujara hopes that he stays fit as he is getting the ball to turn considerably. Ends by saying that the pitch has uneven bounce and both spin and pace will come into the fore.
  • Sanjay Manjrekar reports from the pitch and says the grass it had on Days 1 and 2 has gone considerably. Adds that the surface looks dry underneath and looks difficult for batting. Further adds that there are a lot of rough patches on both sides of the track but it shouldn't excite the bowlers too much as it is on a shortish length. Ends by saying that the deterioration on the pitch is likely to assist the seamers as well as the spinners.
  • For India, Ashwin is also carrying a niggle it seems. He wasn't on the field much on Day 2 and even yesterday, he was bowling a bit gingerly. Also, if luck favors the home team, even the weather could play a vital role in shielding England from a defeat, in their own backyard. Let us see how the day unfolds. The play starts in a short while, keep a cuppa handy and stay tuned.
  • Hello and welcome to the fourth day of the third Test between England and India. It's overcast in Nottingham but the sun is shining brightly on the visitors currently. It will be fair to say that India have a firm grip on this match, that too within the first three days. Now, the three main things that the home team will need to battle against during this steep run chase are - a world record chase, unfavorable batting conditions and last but not the least, the unfortunate finger injury to Bairstow who is unlikely to bat.
  • ... Day 4, Session 1 ...
  • England, on the other hand, will have to take it session by session. The injury to Jonny Bairstow has added to their woes. It is going to be an uphill task for them and they will have to bat out of their skin if they are to pull off a miracle. So, what is in store for us - India continuing their domination or England fighting back? Join us at 1100 local (1000 GMT) to find out on Day 4. Till then goodbye and take care.
  • The Indian batsmen have done their job and now the onus is on their bowlers to do the rest. They will come out fresh tomorrow and try and repeat their first innings performance. The pitch has still plenty to offer and the Indian bowlers will want to make use of it.
  • The visitors are still way ahead in the contest, courtesy, Kohli and Pujara who stitched a 113-run stand. The two took their time, got their eye in and then flourished as the day progressed. Pujara was unfortunate to not get a century whereas the Indian skipper, this time, got to his 23rd Test ton. Pandya's cameo was the icing on the cake which helped them take the lead over the 500-run mark.
  • So, the English openers have survived the nervy period and will head into Day 4 unscathed. Exactly what they would have wanted after being set a massive target. India though would have loved to get a wicket or two before Stumps. Anyway, they bowled well but just could not find the edge.

  • 7.4How many times have we seen the ball beat the bat today? First it was the English bowlers and now the Indians. On a length around off, this one also straightens. Jennings tries to block it but gets beaten.
  • 7.3On a length around off, Jennings leaves it alone. The umpire has a word there with Ishant as he is getting close to the danger area.

  • 4.4Defended off the back foot by the batsman.
  • 4.3FOUR! Bread and butter stuff for Cook! On the pads, he flicks it through mid-wicket and another boundary results. England are doing well here by making the scoring opportunities count. To not get bogged down in such a massive run chase is very vital.

  • 2.2FOUR! Need not run for those! First boundary of this innings. Bumrah bowls it a touch too full and outside off, Keaton strokes it through cover-point and the ball races away.
