  • So that is it from this game. Hope you enjoyed our coverage as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. India have won the series and engraved their name in the history books as this becomes their 11th consecutive Test series win at home. This is not the end of the series though. We go to Ranchi for the third and final Test of the series. That game begins on 19th October, i.e., Saturday. Join us for that one. Till then cheers!
  • Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, who is also the Man of the Match comes in for the chat. Talking about his seventh double ton, Kohli says that captaincy pressure has helped him. Adds that he does not plan to go and score a double century but goes in with the mindset of playing five sessions for the team and score runs. On his muted celebrations after reaching the milestone, Kohli says that he has matured over the years which is a natural process. Adds that he is in a phase of his career where things like scoring centuries or double centuries does not matter much to him. Points out that helping the team win is more important. On his stand with Rahane, when Rabada was bowling well, Kohli says that he enjoys batting with Rahane. Points out that both of them love to play against top-class bowlers and score runs for the side. Adds that they both help each other whenever they are out in the middle. Talking about the catching in the slip cordon, Kohli points that they have planned well and everyone is doing well. Mentions Saha for his superb keeping and adds that even Ashwin came back into the side well. On the unassailable lead in the series, Kohli says that the series win is okay but mentions that since all these games are part of the ICC Test Championship, they will not take the foot off the gas.
  • Faf du Plessis, the South African skipper is the first one to have a word. Talking about the first innings, Faf says that the first innings are always important in the subcontinent. Congratulates Kohli for his superb double tons and points out that the side got tired up because of tough two days. Adds that the team needs to be on the top of the game but they weren't and hence the defeat. Talking further on Kohli's century, Faf says that Kohli was too good in the entire innings. Says that Kohli looked determined and he was hungry for runs. On his three pacer combination, Faf believes the selection was a right call but admits that the bowlers need to do well. Points out that the Indian seamers have done well and they never look out of form. Mentions that he can't blame debutant Nortje for this game. On Ngidi, Faf says that he is fine and working well on his fitness but on these conditions he needs to be completely fit to bowl longer spells.
  • Stay tuned for the presentation.
  • Umesh Yadav and Saha are in for a quick chat with Sanjay Manjrekar. Talking about the two catches that Saha took off Umesh's bowling, the pacer thanks his wicket-keeper and says that with Saha, we are sure that even if the ball is down the leg side, Saha can catch them. Talking about his second ball wicket, Umesh points out that there is healthy competition in the team. Adds that he keeps working hard and practices well. Points that he has a mindset that whenever he gets an opportunity, he is ready to do well. Saha talking about his keeping says that keeping against the pacers is tough as they bowl with the wobble seam. On his fitness, Saha says that everyone works well with the trainer and they prepare well ahead of the games. On his return to the side, Umesh says that he knew that he will get a game for sure and adds that he had taken 10 wickets in his last game and was very confident.
  • India dominated the day from the moment the toss went in their favour. The hosts after opting to bat put up a massive total of 601/5, courtesy of a magnificent unbeaten 254 from skipper Virat Kohli. With the help of a century from Mayank Agarwal and fifties from Jadeja, Pujara and Rahane, the Indians posted a huge first innings total. The hosts continued their dominance with the ball too as they wrapped up South Africa for 275. Ashwin was the star with the ball in the first innings as he finished with a 4-fer.
  • We were treated by another brilliant display of bowling by the Indian bowlers. All the recognized bowlers got into the wickets column. Jadeja and Umesh shared 6 wickets equally amongst themselves whereas Ashwin got two. While Shami and Ishant Sharma had one wicket each. The duo of Ashwin and Umesh had a very good game with the ball finishing the match with 6-wickets each.
  • It was a lacklustre show once again from the South African batters, especially the top order. When there is a follow-on, the top order, especially the openers need to put up a fight but it was a no show from the top-order. Only 4 players went past the double digit score. With two of them, Maharaj and Philander being tail-enders. This in itself shows the sorry state of the South African batting. Elgar and Temba Bavuma were the only two 'recognized' batters who showed some fight. Faf du Plessis showed resilience but that was not good enough.
  • After keeping the suspense on Day 3, India decided to enforce the follow-on. They got off to a brilliant start, getting rid of Aiden Markram on the very second ball of the day. The Indian bowlers were well on top in the first session and picked 4 wickets. They had a similar start to the second session as well. They got 3 wickets post Lunch but Keshav Maharaj and Vernon Philander once again troubled the hosts. But the Tea break brought a lapse in concentration between the duo as it took only around 7 overs for India to wrap up the innings.
  • 2-0 it is which means India have taken an unassailable lead in the three-match series. With another 40 points in the World Test Championship, India not just increase their lead at the top they also become the first team to reach 200 points and maintain their unbeaten run in WTC.
  • 67.2OUT! The on-field umpire is spot on! Three reds and South Africa have been bundled out. Shorter pitching on off, Keshav looks to defend but misses. The ball hits him on his back pad. The Indian players go up in a loud and confident appeal. The umpire nods his head and raises his finger. Maharaj takes it upstairs. Replays roll in, Ultra Edge shows that there was no bat involved and then Ball Tracker shows three reds. The ball was clipping the leg pole. INDIA WIN BY AN INNINGS AND 137 RUNS.
  • UDRS TIME! Is this game over? Looks close. Here comes the Ultra Edge, no bat. Here comes the Ball Tracker. Three reds it is.
  • 67.1Tossed up on off, Maharaj pushes it back to the bowler.
  • Anrich Nortje is the last man in for the visitors.
  • 66.6OUT! CAUGHT! The over ends the way it started. India now just a wicket away from wrapping up this game. Fuller outside off, Rabada looks to defend but then decides to leave. Too late though as the ball finds the edge and goes to the man at second slip. Rohit Sharma bends forward and takes a good catch. 189/9
  • 66.5FOUR! Overpitched around off, Rabada gets on his front foot and drives it off the meat of his bat through covers for a boundary.

  • 66.1OUT! CAUGHT! The consistent bad ball has actually produced the breakthrough. Once again Umesh bowls it full and down the leg side. Lucky breakthrough for Umesh but he isn't complaining.
  • 65.6How did that miss the stumps? Just over the stumps. Jadeja gives it a lot of air and bowls it full. Maharaj comes forward to defend but the ball shoots off the surface and goes over the stumps. Saha is hit on the chest as he looks to grab it. 185/7
  • 65.5Fuller ball this time, Philander pushes it back to the bowler. Jadeja looks to deflect it onto the stumps but he fails to do so. The ball goes towards mid off. Kohli there dives and stops the ball but a single taken.

  • 63.1Flighted on the stumps, Philander keeps it out.
  • Ravindra Jadeja is back!
  • 62.6FOUR! Hammered! Yadav goes for the bouncer but looked as if there was hardly any energy. It doesn't bounce much and Maharaj hammers it to the mid-wicket fence. The boundary brings back-to-back 50-run stand between the two. 180/7
  • 62.5Play and a miss! Good length ball in the channel outside off. Maharaj goes for the expansive drive but can't get bat on ball.
  • 62.4Bouncer this time. KM ducks under it.

  • 61.1Bowls one wide outside off, Philander leaves it alone.
  • Welcome back for the final session on Day 4. Can this is be the final session of the match as well? The Indian players walk out to the middle. They would want to close the innings and match today itself. Out come Philander and Maharaj and they would want to extend it as soon as possible. Let's see how things turn up. It's skipper Virat Kohli who will start the proceedings for the hosts. What move it that? Philander to face the first ball.
  • ... Day 4, Session 3 ...
  • Just 5 overs in the session for pacers. Only Mohammed Shami was the pacer to get the ball in this session. Jadeja and Ashwin were good but the tail troubled him. Jadeja will feel hard done by as Keshav Maharaj was dropped early in his innings of his bowling by Pujara. India would surely don't want to come back on Day 5 and would look to finish it off in the final session of the day itself. Can they do it? Join us after the break to find out.
  • Another session that was won by India but towards the end it was like a repeat telecast of Day 3. Keshav Maharaj and Vernon Philander annoyed the Indian bowlers yesterday and they have done the same here. Just like the morning session, the hosts picked up a wicket early on. Temba Bavuma showed some fight but fell before his fifty. Muthusamy irritated the Indian bowlers before throwing in the towel. Keshav Maharaj and Vernon Philander then once again joined hands just like the first innings and ensured they head into Tea with still 3 wickets to spare.

  • 56.6Defended off the back foot by the batsman. 161/7

The ball takes the outside edge and flies towards slip. Pujara at second slip throws his left hand to catch but the ball doesn't stick to his palms and lobs behind. He makes a valiant effort to catch it in the second attempt to catch but collides with Rahane who is also trying to get to the ball. Both slip and can't hold on. Keshav Maharaj looks to play it on the off side but it takes something and goes to the left of Saha. He takes the ball on the full. A huge appeal follows but the umpire shakes his head. He bowls a back of a length ball around off, Senuran looks to fend it off of his toes but the ball takes the outside edge and goes straight to Rohit Sharma at second slip. Very seldom we get to see an Indian bowler bouncing out a batsman with a short ball on the fourth day Indian surface. Top stuff from Mohammed Shami. India just three wickets away from a win.

  • DRINKS! Two wickets in the first hour of the second session. Bavuma did well to get to 38 but was done with a beauty from Jadeja. Earlier, Quinton de Kock played a poor shot to go back to the pavilion. India are just 4 wickets away and would want to close the game as soon as they can. However, they faced problems in removing the tail in the first innings as well when Philander and Maharaj presented spirited fight. Can the lower order of the visitors present similar resistance? Let's see what happens. Vernon Philander to walk out to bat after the break.
  • 43.2OUT! Caught! Bavuma's fight comes to an end. Floated delivery around off, Bavuma looks to drive it to the off side. The ball though spins away and kisses the outside edge. It goes to the left of Rahane at first slip. The Indian Test side's vice captain dives on that side and takes an excellent catch.
  • 43.1SAFE! No glove and the ball is way outside off. Tossed up around off, Bavuma looks to sweep but the ball lobs off towards first slip. Rahane takes it on the up. The Indian players gather and Kohli takes the review. Replay rolls in and first it shows the ball was missing both the bat and glove. Ball Tracker comes up next and it shows that the impact was outside off and the ball was missing off stump by a mile. India lose one of their two reviews.
  • Review time. Not sure whether it is for a catch or LBW. If it is for the latter then it looks like a waste of a review as the ball as hit his pad on the off pole at best. It is spinning away too as well. Let us see what the replays have to say.

  • 39.1On the pads, Senuran tucks it towards mid-wicket and takes a couple.

The ball keeps low as well. De Kock for some absurd reason goes for a big slog sweep but the ball goes between the bat and pad onto the middle stump. Ravichandran Ashwin to bowl the first over after Lunch, de Kock to face. Two slips, a short leg and a silly point as the close-in catchers. Here we go...
  • ... Day 4, Session 2 ...
  • So a South Africa defeat looks inevitable. Only a miracle can see them go past India's trail forget about putting India to bat. They will now look to play hour by hour. Kohli and his troops will now be looking to wrap this up in the next session itself. Can they do it? Join us for the second session to find out.
  • It was a brilliant bowling display from the Indians. They bowled the right lines and lengths and kept the Protea batters at bay. Ashwin's fine Test continued as he added 2 more wickets to his 4 that he took in the first innings of the game. Ishant and Umesh were the other bowlers to get into the wickets column. But the unsung hero of this session has to be Wriddhimann Saha. He took two blinders which are equally his wicket as the bowlers.
  • After enforcing the follow-on, India started the day with a bang. On the very second ball of the day, Ishant struck gold sending Markram for a duck, making him grab a pair for the first time in his Test career. Luck too went India's way as Ball Tracker later on showed that the ball was missing the stumps. That wicket though set the pretext of the session. Theunis de Bruyn stayed for a while before a stunning catch from Saha saw his back. Elgar and Faf du Plessis then tried to grind it out in the middle. The duo added a 49-run stand before the skipper was sent back after another fine catch from Saha. Elgar was fighting a lone battle but a rush of blood moment saw him throw his wicket away.
  • If we say it is India's session then that would mean we are just stating the obvious. India have completely annihilated South Africa in this session.

  • 23.3OUT! CAUGHT! Saha you beauty. What a blinder that from the wicket keeper. Faf du Plessis has to walk back. Ashwin fires this one closer to the off pole, Faf looks to defend but the ball takes an inside edge, hits the back thigh and goes to Saha behind the wicket very quickly. Saha there fumbles a bit but does well to keep the ball in the air, once, twice, thrice and then in the fourth attempt he gobbles it diving forward. Excellent work from Saha and he continues to prove why Kohli terms him as the best keeper of the country. Just 5 runs off 54 balls for the Protea skipper. His long vigil ends and the situation for South Africa worsen further. 10 minutes to go for Lunch. Can India strike one more time?

  • 20.6Nicely bowled! Huge appeal from the Indians but umpire is not moved. Floats it around off, Elgar looks to defends but the ball hits his pad and lobs towards Rahane who dives to pouch that catch. Indians appeal but not out says the umpire. Ultra Edge rolls in and looks like there is a spike but Rahane himself was not sure. 66/2
  • 20.5On the pads this time, Elgar tucks it towards mid-wicket and changes end.
  • 20.4Jadeja fires this one on the pads, Faf looks to work it down the leg side but misses. The ball goes towards short fine leg for a single.

  • Ravindra Jadeja is into the attack.
  • 17.6Tossed up on off, Faf keeps it out. 60/2
  • 17.5Floated on middle and leg, Faf flicks it through mid-wicket. There was an easy single on offer but for some reason du Plessis does not take it.
  • 17.4NOT OUT! The impact saves the Protea skipper. Ashwin floats this around off, Faf goes for the sweep but can't connect and is hit on the pads. Ashwin and India appeal but the umpire does not agree. Ashwin is not sure but Saha it seems is confident and Kohli goes for the review. Here comes the Ball Tracker, the impact is umpire's call and hence it doesn't matter even if the ball is hitting the timbers. An excellent review from the Indians because that was marginal. Had Faf been adjudged LBW he would have had to walk back but not the case though.
  • Review time! India have taken a review for LBW! Faf du Plessis is the man in question. Ashwin did not seem too confident once the umpire turned it down but Saha is convinced and Kohli takes it upstairs.
  • 17.3On the pads on a fullish length, tucked towards mid-wicket for a run.
  • 17.2On middle again, pushed towards cover this time.

  • 12.4Beauty again but no edge! Good length ball around off which seams away after pitching just a hint. Elgar has a push but misses.
  • 12.3Beaten! Or is it? Saha feels there is an edge. Rohit is not sure through. Kohli is asking Saha if he heard anything. Should they go for the DRS or not? They don't eventually and lucky that they did not opt for it as the Ultra Edge arrived to show no tickle. It was a good length ball outside off, Elgar went for the drive but misses. Lucky not to edge that one.
  • 12.3Wide! Another bouncer! Elgar again ducks under it as it is too high. Called wide as well by the umpire so Shami has to re-bowl that ball.
  • 12.2Bumper but too high. Elgar leaves it alone.
  • 12.1FOUR! Nicely guided through point and gully. Fullish length on the fourth stump line, Elgar comes forward and guides the ball with an angled bat. The ball races to the third man fence. The boundary brings 50 up for the Proteas.
  • DRINKS! So, after the Indian skipper enforced the follow-on, they have managed to get the two wickets quickly. Ishant struck in the very first over to remove Markram while Umesh did not take much time either to send Theunis de Bruyn packing. Markram was unlucky as the replays revealed that had he opted for the review, he would've survived but that was not to be. Skipper Faf du Plessis walked in at number 4 and has seen off the first hour along with Elgar who has got a few streaky boundaries but would love to continue bat as long as he can. India's plans would be simple. Keep chipping in with wickets and do not allow the partnership to get bigger. Interesting hour ahead.
  • 11.6Floated on off, the ball turns in a lot. Faf looks to defend but gets hit on the pads. There is a stifled appeal but the umpire is unmoved. 49/2
  • 11.5Ouch! That must have hurt. Tossed up on middle and off, Faf gets down on one knee and hits the sweep shot hard. Rohit Sharma at short leg, turns away and the ball hits him on his lower calf. Rohit is fine to continue though.

  • 10.4After back-to-back boundaries, Elgar calmly defends this one.
  • 10.3FOUR! First boundary off the cover drive in this innings. Fuller around off, Elgar gets on his front foot and creams it through cover. Cover drives are always beautiful but when a southpaw hits it they look even better.
  • 10.2FOUR! Good shot! Fuller around off, Elgar strokes it through point for a boundary.
  • 10.1Shami comes and straightaway there is excitment. He starts with a bouncer. It is around off, Elgar looks to pull but then decides to pull away from the shot. He ends up lobbing up off the upper half of his bat. Luckily for Elgar it falls in no man's land on the on side.
  • Mohammed Shami to bowl now.
  • 9.6On the fourth stump line, Faf lets it be. 35/2
  • 9.5On the pads again, Elgar glances it through fine leg to change ends.

  • 8.5Length ball on off, Elgar works it to square leg and shouts a loud no.

  • 8.3Outside off, Elgar leaves it alone.
  • 8.2FOUR! Poor ball from Ishant. He strays down on the pads. These are easy pickings for Elgar. He just eases his flick through mid-wicket for a boundary.

  • 7.6Outside off, Faf leaves it alone. 29/2
  • 7.5Fuller on middle, Elgar pushes it wide of mid on for a single.

  • 6.6Fuller on off, du Plessis keeps it out. 26/2
  • 6.5Another gem of a delivery. Fuller around off and middle, du Plessis looks to defend but it jags back in and takes the inside edge of the bat and goes behind square on the leg side.
  • 6.4On the pads, Faf looks to flick but it goes off the inner half of his bat through square leg for a couple. Du Plessis is off the mark but not in the most convincing manner. The trail now is 300.
  • 6.3Good ball and a good leave. Outside off and it comes in off the deck. Faf shows awareness of his off pole and offers a very good leave.
  • 6.2Length ball around off, Elgar punches it towards point and gets to the other end.
  • 6.1In the air but safe again. Elgar continues to ride his luck. Short ball closer to the body, Elgar looks to pull but it goes off the upper half of his bat wide of mid-wicket for a single.
  • 5.6Good length ball outside off, du Plessis leaves it alone. 21/2
  • 5.5Another one down the leg side, Faf though does not get any bat on it as he misses his flick.
  • No Bavuma. It's skipper Faf du Plessis who has finally come out at number 4. Interesting!
  • 5.4OUT! Caught! Brilliant catch from Wridhimann Saha and smart bowling from Umesh. He was bowling in and around off and then he surprises Theunis with a one down the leg side. He tried it in the last over but that was way down, this one is closer to the body. De Bruyn looks to flick but the ball kisses his bat and goes to the left of the keeper. Saha dives to that side and takes a one-handed stunner. If you were wondering why Saha was picked over Pant, then this catch is the reason. He is hailed as one of the best keepers in the world and this is a proof of it. South Africa in all sorts of trouble. 2 down in the 6th over of the day.
  • 5.3Good length ball on off, Theunis pushes it to point.
  • 5.2Fuller and closer to off, de Bruyn defends it off the front foot.

  • 4.6Around off, Elgar this time calmly defends it. 21/1
  • 4.5EDGED AND FOUR! Another boundary off the edge. Fuller around off, it zips away after pitching. Elgar goes for it in a wild way and the ball takes a fat outside edge of his willow and goes uppishly wide of gully for a boundary.
  • 4.4Another edge that does not carry. If you're thinking the slip should come in then that will be difficult as there is good carry. Length ball on off, Elgar looks to defend with soft hands but gets a thick outside edge. The fact that he played it with soft hands worked in his favour as that was the reason the ball did not carry to Kohli at third slip.
  • 4.3On off, Elgar keeps it out.
  • 4.2EDGED AND FOUR! Third boundary of the innings and all three have come off the outside edge. • 3.5FOUR BYES! Poor ball from Umesh. He misses his line and bowls one down the leg side. Theunis looks to flick but misses. The ball keeps on going with the angle as even Saha, who was diving to his left cannot save it. The idea was right to surprise him with a ball on middle and leg after going in and around off but the execution was not.

  • 1.2Could have been disastrous for South Africa. Back of a length ball on off, Elgar defends it with soft hands towards cover-point and calls for a quick single. A direct hit and Theunis would've been walking into the pavilion.
  • 1.1Umesh starts with a length delivery on off, Elgar starts his innings with a back foot defense.
  • Umesh Yadav to share the new ball with Ishant Sharma from the other end. He had struck in the first over of the first innings. Can he do the same this innings?

Ishant goes slightly fuller and once again gets the ball in to the right-hander. Markram looks to defend but the ball hits him on high on the pads. The Indian players go up in a huge appeal and the umpire raises his finger. Markram has a word with his partner, Elgar. Dean does not look sure and just when Markram was about to review the timer gets to zero. Markram's first pair in Tests. Ishant gets his first wicket of the game. Well hold on, Ball Tracker later on rolls in and it is a disappointing news for Markram, Elgar and the whole of South Africa. The Ball Tracker shows the ball was going onto miss the stumps.
  • 0.1Excellent delivery to start the innings. Ishant starts with a good length ball outside off, it comes back in viciously. Markram offers a dangerous leave but as they say, if you leave and it does not hit you then it is a good leave.
