  • Okay! The Malinga chapter is done in ODIs but what about this series? It has just begun! Will Bangladesh be able to bounce back and level the series? Will Sri Lanka be able to move on from the Slinga absence? Only time will tell. Join us on Sunday, 28th July, 2019 at 2.30 pm local (0900 GMT) for all the action from the second ODI. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
  • The fireworks go off and 'Thank you, Mali!' signboards go up in the stands. Boy, he will be missed. Those yorkers. Fast and furious. Then some with terrific change in pace, taking ever so long to come. But deadly accurate. Thank you, Lasith Malinga, for teaching us that it is not always archers who can be accurate. Thank you, for teaching us that it is not only bowlers with conventional action who can survive in this sport. A terrific competitor, but a humble human being. Wishing you a great future in whatever you do next, though there is plenty of T20 cricket still to come.
  • A long, emotional speech comes to an end at last. Another presentation. This time from Malinga, as he gives a token of appreciation to former Lankan fast bowling coach, Champaka Ramanayake. A wonderful gesture.
  • Lasith Malinga is now given a special token, with his family being invited as well. Time for the farewell speech. He chooses to do so in Sinhalese and the crowd goes wild.
  • Victorious Sri Lankan captain, Dimuth Karunaratne, says that all the team members supported him throughout the World Cup. Reckons that the Lankans were on the right path even during the mega tournament but they just needed some time to enhance. Believes that tournament opened up their plans to bat well consistently and that was witnessed in this game. On Malinga's final game, Karunaratne says that he egged his boys on to give their 200 percent for the legend. Admits that the Lankans need to find a couple of bowlers as Malinga's replacement but is happy with the performance of Lahiru Kumara. On the legend finally, Dimuth says that Malinga has been a great servant of Sri Lankan cricket, always stepping up when the captain needed him to and says that he will be missed, though he will be around in the T20Is.
  • Bangladesh captain, Tamim Iqbal, manages to put in a smile. Admits that he has been struggling with the bat over the last few weeks and needs to start performing. Praises his bowlers for coming back strongly towards the end as at one stage, they looked to be chasing 350. But is disappointed over the no-show with the bat. On missing the injured key players, Tamim says that he is happy with the squad of 15 that he has and it is just a matter of realizing one's role. Feels that there are still two more matches to go and if he starts scoring and everyone else chips in, things will change.
  • KUSAL PERERA HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH for his spectacular 111. First, he is asked as to how is he feeling since he did not take part in the second innings. Kusal says that it was a slight back niggle and he is feeling better now. On his batting innings, Perera says that the number 3 role suits him more and he played his shots, taking a calculated risk every now and then as Bangladesh were bowling well. On Lasith Malinga, Perera says that he is a legend, always helping and advising youngsters.
  • Take aside Lasith Malinga, there were quite a few positives for Sri Lanka in this game. But they need more of these and with some consistency. Where were these during the World Cup? Do they have the batsmen to step up when needed? Do they have seamers in store for the future? Sunday and Wednesday will give us a better indication. Time for the presentation...
  • 'Mali! Mali! Mali!' were the chants continuously as soon as the Lankans took the field in the second innings. And he did not disappoint. He knocked Tamim Iqbal's timber over and then had Soumya Sarkar dismissed in identical fashion. At 39/4, the game looked done and dusted and the 111-run stand between Mushfiqur Rahim and Sabbir Rahman just delayed the inevitable. Nuwan Pradeep did a decent job with 3 scalps and fittingly in the end, it was Slinga who closed the game, with his third scalp.
  • Coming to the game, it was totally Sri Lanka. They put their best foot forward by winning the toss and though they lost Avishka Fernando early, Kusal Perera and skipper Dimuth Karunaratne took the game away with a 97-run stand. Perera's 111 knocked the wind out of Bangladesh's sails and even though they did come back towards the end, 314/8 was a big enough total on the board.
  • Lasith Malinga says that he has played the last 15 years for Sri Lanka and believes that it is time for the new generation to take over for the 2023 World Cup. Thanks the crowd for its continuous support. Is happy with the win. On his effort throughout his career, Malinga says that his captain always expected him to take a wicket and he tried his best. On the Lankan future, Lasith says that there are a couple of Lankan youngsters in the ranks and they should be looked after.
  • The legend is taking a walk around the park with one of the greatest Sri Lankan fans, if not the greatest, Percy, who is happy to follow him like a bodyguard. The Lankan star is taking a victory march, with Percy happily waving the Lankan flag around. He is now halted in his tracks, after completing the march, for a chat, by Roshan Abeysinghe.
  • Numbers. That is what the game is made up of. 35. Malinga's age. Just a number. 91. The victory margin for Sri Lanka tonight. Again, just another number. But the numbers that matter - 226 ODIs and 338 wickets. Goes past Anil Kumble and moves to number 9 in the list of leading wicket-takers in ODIs. 536 international wickets. Take a bow, Separamadu Lasith Malinga.
  • 41.4OUT! Caught! Lasith Malinga fittingly takes the final wicket of the match! He stands there with his arms aloft in the air and the Lankan supporters are on their feet, to applaud their favourite son. A length ball outside off, slightly slower, Mustafizur backs away and aims to hit this over mid off. But he only skies it high in the air and it is a pressure catch for Thisara Perera. Yes, pressure catch because it could be the final time he would be involved in helping Mali take a wicket. He runs back from short extra cover, keeps his eyes on the ball and takes it over his head. SRI LANKA WIN BY 91 RUNS!
  • 41.3Almost! A slower ball outside off, Rubel backs away, aiming to steer it towards third man but is defeated by the lack of pace. Somehow, the ball hits the bat and deflects behind point. A single taken.
  • 41.2A yorker outside off, squeezed straight to point.
  • 41.1FOUR! That has stunned the crowd into silence. A length ball, around middle, Rubel swings it cleanly over mid-wicket, a bounce and into the fence!
  • Last 6 balls (technically) of Malinga's ODI career. Could be last 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 ball also...
  • 40.6FOUR! Edgy but will do for Bangladesh. Pradeep bowls it on the off side on a good length, Rahman tries to drive it towards cover but gets a thick outside edge. The ball flies between 3rd slip and gully and races away towards the third man fence for a boundary. 218/9
  • 40.5Yorker this time by Pradeep, the Fizz heaves it over point. The fielders cut it off before it reaches the boundary and the batters take two.
  • 40.4Bouncer by Pradeep, at full pace on middle and leg. Rahman somehow ducks and gets out of the way of the ball.
  • 40.3Backs away to the leg side and Pradeep fires it wide outside off. The Fizz lets it go.
  • 40.2FOUR! Off the edge this time! Gosh - how did the bat come down in time? A full and fast ball, in line of the stumps, Mustafizur looks to protect his left leg, getting it out of the way but manages to get his bat down in time. The ball goes off the outside edge, towards second slip, but wide of the diving Dhananjaya de Silva, to the third man fence.
  • 40.1FOUR! Full ball just outside off, Rahman makes room for himself and plays it over the covers for a boundary.
  • Powerplay 3 time. 5 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle, if Karunaratne wants.

  • 39.3Play and a miss! Mustafizur is just looking to smash it out of the park. He heaves at the ball and misses.
  • 39.2Almost a yorker outside off, Rahman tries to heave it over mid-wicket but bottom edges it towards mid-wicket.
  • 39.1Slower ball on a good length just outside off, Rahman plays inside the line of the delivery.
  • 38.6Short in length and outside off, Rahman throws his bat at it and slaps it over point. Avishka chases it down near the fence, in fact the ball stopped itself, and the fielder pulls it back with a slide. The batsmen take three. 4 runs and two wickets in the over and Sri Lanka will be smelling victory! 203/9
  • 38.5Beaten again! On a good length and close to off, Mustafizur tries to push inside the line and misses.
  • 38.4Play and a miss! Pradeep switches to 'round the wicket and delivers it on a length outside off. Rahman tries playing the line but it nips away to beat the outside edge.
  • Mustafizur Rahman is the last batsman.
  • 38.3OUT! Stumps are disturbed, number 9 goes down for Bangladesh. Good length ball on the perfect line for Pradeep, the off pole line. The ball pitches and just slightly nips away from the line of the bat. It goes past the outside edge and clips the top of off stump. The Lankans are on the brink of victory here.
  • 38.2Pitches it up and outside off, Rubel drives it through covers and gets a run to open his account.
  • Rubel Hossain is the new batsman.
  • 38.1OUT! Pradeep strikes straightaway and eliminates Bangladesh's last hope. He delivers a shortish length ball in the line of the stumps, Rahim shuffles across the stumps to paddle it around the corner but fails to get the desired connection. It comes off the bottom edge and settles into the safe gloves of Kusal Mendis. Good fight from Rahim is over, he walks back dejected.
  • Nuwan Pradeep returns into the attack.
  • 37.6Bouncer by Malinga, Rahim tries to pull this one but only gets a top edge to it. The ball floats towards the fine leg region and Rahim keeps the strike by taking a single. 199/7
  • 37.5Full on the pads of Mushfiqur, he pushes it towards mid on.
  • 37.5Wide! Again down the leg side by Malinga, this time Rahim goes for it but he misses. The umpire has wided this one too.
  • 37.5Wide! Down the leg side by Malinga, Rahim lets it be.
  • 37.4Direct hit and Islam was a goner. Malinga bowls a yorker on the off pole and Rahim jams it towards cover. Islam sets off for a run but is sent back by Mushfiqur. Thisara goes for a direct hit towards the non-striker's end but luckily for Islam, he misses.
  • 37.3Good length ball on off, Rahim defends it off the back foot.
  • 37.2Leg bye. Full ball again outside leg, it hits the pad of Islam and the ball rolls towards square leg. The batters cross and take a run.
  • Lasith Malinga is into the attack again. 7-2-28-2, so far.
  • 37.1Full on the pads of Rahim, he glances it towards fine leg for a single.
  • 36.6Flatter ball on leg, Rahim guides it towards square leg and keeps the strike. 10-0-49-2, job well done by the part-timer! 194/7
  • 36.5Islam guides this one towards square leg and takes a single.

  • 35.4Similar length, Islam misses again. Kumara keeping him on strike and doing well for Sri Lanka here.
  • 35.3Short one again. Islam again tries to play at it but misses. He looks out of sorts here.
  • 35.3Wide! Another bouncer by Kumara but this time it is too high. Islam tries to play at it but misses and the ball carries through to the keeper.
  • 35.2Bouncer following the yorker. Islam tries to get bat on ball but misses. The Lankans appeal but it is dismissed by the umpire.
  • 35.1Yorker to begin with by Kumara. Shafiul digs it out towards point.
  • Shafiul Islam walks in now as Sri Lanka get into the Bangladeshi bowlers.
  • 34.6OUT! Caught behind! Dhananjaya has his second. This match looks to be hurrying to a close now. Landed outside off, Mehedi looks to guide it towards third man but only feathers it into the gloves of Kusal Mendis who collects it and straightaway leaps in celebration. The umpire has his finger raised this time. Useful from DdS - 9-0-46-2. 187/7

  • 33.3Outside off, Mehidy ducks.
  • Mehedi Hasan walks in next. Slip comes in straightaway.
  • 33.3OUT! Run out! Oh my... What have the Bangladeshi batsmen done here? Kumara bowls this ball short and wide outside leg. Mosaddek tries to pull this one but misses and the ball goes high to Kusal Mendis. He leaps up and stops it from going behind him but the batters think it has gone away from the keeper. Mosaddek responds to Rahim's call and sets off for a run. Suddenly, Rahim sends Mosaddek back as keeper Kusal Mendis has collected the ball. He takes off his gloves, sees that he has three stumps to aim at and goes for the direct hit at the keeper's end and hits. Mosaddek is way short and has to depart. The budding partnership is broken and Rahim looks to be running out of partners. Just for the record, it was given as a wide as well.

  • 30.5On middle and leg, worked through mid-wicket for one.

  • 30.3The batsman has played it towards mid-wicket.
  • 30.2On middle, worked through mid-wicket for a single. 36th ODI fifty for Rahim! He has batted sensibly so far but will need to stay till the end if Bangladesh have to stay in the hunt.
  • 30.1Excellent stop in the deep. Landed around middle, Rahim gets down and pulls it through mid-wicket. Avishka Fernando gives a good chase in the deep, runs to his right, dives and flicks it towards substitute Wanindu Hasaranga who comes running to his left from fine leg. A couple taken.
  • DRINKS! The Tigers have pulled it back in this phase and the run chase is on. However, they have lost the important wicket of Sabbir Rahman who was well set and looking to go big. Mushfiqur and Mosaddek will be looking to take this chase as deep as they possibly can. Sri Lanka on the other hand will be looking to break this partnership and get into the tail-enders.
  • 29.6FOUR! Fine shot. A short ball, around middle, Mosaddek pulls it through mid-wicket. Lahiru Thirimanne dives to his right in the deep but in vain. 161/5

  • 29.3The batsman flicks it away with a wristy shot. They pick up a single.
  • 29.2Connects with the pull this time, through square leg and gets a run.
  • 29.2WIDE. This is signalled a wide. A short ball, down the leg side, Mosaddek looks to pull but misses.
  • 29.1Down the leg side, is that a catch? Not a wide either. Bizarre. Malinga bowls his first ball full and down the leg side. Mossadek looks to flick but misses. The Lankans thought that Hossain had edged it. Hossain is amused how it has not been wided. The ball has carried through to the keeper who also appeals loudly. Everyone is puzzled by this decision. It seems like the umpire is of the opinion that it clipped the pads of the batter.
  • Dimuth Karunaratne has brought the stadium alive. By bringing Lasith Malinga back into the attack. 5-2-12-2 so far.
  • 28.6Pushes this through mid on for a run. 4 runs and a wicket from the over, Dhananjaya's figures read 6-0-34-1. 153/5

  • 28.3Pushes this through mid on for a run.
  • Mosaddek Hossain walks in at number 7, replacing Sabbir.
  • 28.2OUT! Caught! For the second time in the game, Nelson has struck. In the first innings, it was Kusal Perera who was dismissed for 111. Here, it is the 111-run stand which has been broken. Tossed up on middle, Sabbir comes down the track and looks to flick it over the leg side. He does not connect it well enough and this ground is not that small either. Simple catch for Lahiru Kumara at deep mid-wicket. Rahman hits himself with his bat as he walks off. Could not quite finish the job. Bangladesh in a spot of bother again. 165 more needed from 130 balls.
